past students are working as stylist in Industry, Fashion Magazines, Event
Management Company as freelancers and few started own business of Bridal
Studio, Beauty Salon and Photo studio. MIFT has incorporated fashion
journalism, cosmetology, photography, business and psychology as basic
component of styling to insure wider career opportunities of graduating students.
Conventionally stylists
compose visual images through the use of clothes and accessories. A fashion stylist
dress models and film stars, manage photo shoots, and design costumes for music
videos and events. Stylists spend days matching clothes, shoes, theme,
environment, while being paid for the quality of fashion sense acceptability.
Editorial assignments have
lesser wage rate, while media campaigns and commercials tend to pay better.
In industry stylists are paid a flat fee for the length of a project, this practice
is habitually called a buy-out. Some stylists can be put on a monthly retainer,
in which they are paid a set fee for a period of time and are on call for the
entire time period.
When styling on a media set,
stylist has to manage finance of wardrobe budget or a warehouse of clothing.
Wardrobe Stylists have to control cost of hundreds of extras, depending on the
movie scene. In the media industry, stylist can work as a union or non-union
stylist. Joining a union offers worker protections for wages and hours, and
puts stylist on theatre, film and TV union lists so producers will call you
directly for jobs. Retail is most popular career option for successful wardrobe
stylists. It's a great way to make good connections and networking and also learning
the basics of personal shopping.
- Corporate Styling: corporate
stylist design for government, industries and companies for corporate
uniforms, providing training to staff on personal appearance, magazine
publications.
- Photographic Styling: involves
styling any Photoshoot and includes magazine or print editorial styling,
commercial styling and catalogue styling.
- Show Styling: involves
organising events and fashion parades. This could involve public
speaking/comparing, working backstage at fashion parades, selecting
models, organising the running order, selecting garments and/or
accessories, selecting the venue, developing the event concept, dealing
with the media, photographers, and PR companies.
- Merchandise Styling: Visual
Merchandising, Planogram Design, Range Plan Optimization, Commercial
Planogram lay outing are basic work of merchandise stylist. It involves
managing displays of products in retail stores for photoshoots or for
sale.
- Editorial Styling: involves
organising & managing the photoshoots for commercials, fashion magazines
and other media industries. This engages selecting items to appear in
advertisement product styling pages for magazines and content writing
articles on product style, commercial trends etc.
- Wardrobe Styling: Wardrobe
stylist works on events, television, concert, films or theatre
productions, designing and selecting the wardrobe items for the actors,
musicians, performers, dancers and participating personalities.
- Commercial Styling: styling
of product, ambience, models or actors/actresses for print/TV/film
commercials. This involves anything from managing the wardrobe items to
managing the shoot - selecting the ambient, location, models, makeup stylist
and even the photographer.
- Catalogue Styling: involves
working with business house employees for designing promotional materials
such as product styling and product catalogues.
- Personal Styling: involves
providing recommendation or help to clients on how to manage their social
image by selecting outfits and accessories that harmonize their
association and persona and are suitable for their future business
projects. Designing dresses of the client for political, promotional,
social and public events to give hidden signal to audience. Also managing and giving suggestion on makeup
allergy, skin care, beauty treatments and event protocol.
- Makeup & Hair Stylist:
Makeup stylist is responsible for makeup for events such as prom, a
special occasion, or a wedding. It could be a particular episode makeup,
makeup for small screen or film, or makeup for shooting. It could be
makeup for fashion week models, concert performers, or character makeup
for the opera, drama and theatre. If Makeup and Hair stylist are
working in salon they must have managerial skills also. Foremost duties at salon
include checking of service & operations, making sure that
customers are happy, overseeing employee’s effectiveness,
efficiency and energy, moreover planning to make sure that profitability
and margin rate is improving weekly.
